What is Dolby Atmos
« on: July 12, 2013, 06:39:26 AM »
We are now hearing many people talking about Dolby Atmos audio. Does any one know where to find more information about it i.e specs, manuals, info details etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Also do you believe it will replace the old audio formats soon as is claimed by Dolby?

You can find some information on Dolby's website.

Given the expense, installation complexity and limited content, I'd expect only the larger venues will deploy it in the foreseeable future. Many theaters are still trying to pay off their initial investment in switching to digital as it is.

I've been given an Atmos-encoded audio MXF file, along with an XML that - I assume - carries the "zoning" instructions for the processors. These came along with the source video, the insinuation being that we would handle the picture part of the equation. My guess is that there's no way for me to package these using OpenDCP, but I was hoping for verbal confirmation. It doesn't seem feasible to me that I would create a standard DCP using their MXF and mine, and then just drop the extra XML in and have it work like magic.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking this project is going to land in Fotokem's lap.

This is out of the scope of OpenDCP at this point. I don't have an ATOMS system to test against and I'm not even sure the specs are openly published.

Is Atmos integration anywhere on the horizon, perchance?

No, perhaps when multi-dimensional audio is a full spec.
